In our orphanage work, we organise activities so that each individual child/young person can have one to one care and intensive educational experiences, as most orphanages do not have the resources and staffing to do this effectively.
On supermarket visits (in this case only taking place when Innocent Dove teams visit), we ensure that there is an educator for every one or two children (or young people). This allows for intensive education and a meaningful life skill experience.
Our team members encourage the children and young people to do everything, from following the shopping list, to weighing, paying at the till, receiving the change, getting the receipt, bagging the products and carrying the bags to the coach. The children and young people prepare and eat the food on the following day (in this case King Pow Chicken).
Although we emphasise enabling children and young people to experience and develop life skills, we make sure activities are appropriately differentiated. Safety is a primary concern. Although some children and young people add ingredients and stir the woks, this is closely monitored by team members. This is a different orphanage where Innocent Dove members have teamed up with another charity to provide one to one support for young people to learn how to prepare food. Andy (Co-founder of Innocent Dove) is teaching how to roll the Sushi.
